Find the best fridge for your family

Shopping for a new refrigerator is not as simple and straightforward a task as you might think at first glance. There are many different factors to consider, and since you'll probably keep your fridge for the next decade of your life, you want to take the time to shop around and make sure you're buying the right model.

Energy efficiency is a growing concern to many homeowners, and it makes sense to buy a model that uses the least electricity possible. Even so, this is just one of many things you'll need to consider when shopping for your family's new refrigerator.

Things to Consider When Buying a Fridge

Before you begin shopping, measure the space you have allotted for your refrigerator; you're going to need to limit yourself to models that can fit in that area, and while this may seem like a basic consideration, it's often overlooked. Remember to leave extra room for hinges, cords and wires.

Next, think about plumbing. If you want a model that dispenses water and ice, you will have to connect it to a water supply. If you don't have one nearby, remember that installing additional plumbing can be very expensive.

Then, consider your food storage needs. Do you store a lot of produce and therefore need ample space in your crisper? Do you want a fridge-freezer combo? How much food do you normally store in the refrigerator and freezer? Will a compact unit do, or do you need a fuller-sized model? The smaller the fridge, the cheaper it is to both buy and run.

Finally, consider the finish and style of the fridge. It should work with the rest of your décor; if you've got a modern look in your kitchen, a refrigerator with a stainless steel finish might make an outstanding match. However, if your home décor is more traditional, look for something understated in a neutral color.
